Kitu Kiblu offers internship programs for those interested in whale shark conservation or seeking training and experience in marine conservation and tourism. This program is a unique opportunity to interact with whale sharks on a daily basis. Interns complete appropriate in-house courses and skills training and then work alongside our whale shark tour guides to plan and execute daily whale shark tourism excursions, learn to sail and operate boats, participate in and manage tourist participation in the spot-pattern photo ID project. They also have the opportunity to work alongside visiting marine biologists on whale shark research projects and everyone is expected to be actively involved in our rural development activities .
Excursions on Mafia Island and surrounding islands are planned as part of the program. We can also suggest and help plan a variety of other excursions (at extra cost) to mainland Tanzania for safari and/or Zanzibar, for individuals or groups. It is possible (also at extra cost) to learn to SCUBA dive or take advanced PADI SCUBA certification courses, up to and including Assistant Instructor.
We accept a maximum of 12 interns at any one time, for 2 to 12 week programs. Between September 1st and January 15th. 12 week programs start before December 1st.
Under special circumstances it may be possible for appropriately trained individuals to join us at other times. Please contact us with special request.
Shared accommodation and three meals per day are included at our beach-front research camp. Accommodation can be upgraded to private single or private double bed on request.
